Introduction

Here is an overall lesson plan for the program. It goes through a basic method book series and shows you which Complete Pianist workbook correlates with that particular level. In whatever method book series you choose, you only need to buy the lesson book. The Complete Pianist workbook will cover technique, theory, ear training and more. This lesson plan is meant as a general outline to insure a complete piano education for the student while creating a continuous sense of accomplishment and motivation.

The Alfred and Faber series are the recommended method books to be used. You may substitute these for another series if you prefer.

Although this plan is meant for a young beginner, an adult may use it as well. For these cases, it is recommended that they use Alfred's adult piano course for the method books. This adult course is accelerated and consists of only 3 books instead of 7. An especially talented young person may also do well with this series.

The students weekly assignments will consist of a lesson book song, sight reading (once they get to step 3), a Complete Pianist workbook section and when applicable a recital piece. Here are some helpful tips regarding each category.

  • The Lesson book level is meant to be challenging but not overwhelming. They should be able to pass off around one song a week. This creates a feeling of weekly success and accomplishment.
  • The sight reading exercise can come from any book that is one or two levels below the lesson book level. They should be able to play the songs pretty well the first time through and should sight read one song a day or at least 5 a week.
  • Work through the workbook a section at a time, covering some material each week
  • The performance level piece is the piece they will be playing for an upcoming recital. It will usually be one or two levels above the current lesson book level and will take a few months to master.

This is the overall learning outline for the Complete Pianist method. It explains how and when to use the material found on the material list page.
