His Eye is on the Sparrow was written by Mrs. Civilla D. Martin who told of an experience she had in speaking with some friends, the Doolittles. They were a couple who had suffered from severe health problems for a long time. One day Mr. & Mrs. Martin asked Mrs. Doolittle how she kept from becoming discouraged with all her difficulties. "How can I be discouraged," she replied, "when my Father watches the sparrows, and I know He loves and cares for me?" Soon after hearing Mrs. Doolittle's response, Mrs. Martin wrote the text of "His Eye is on the Sparrow". She sent it to Charles H. Gabriel and he composed the music for her text. This vocal solo arrangement by Marilee Kay Leishman includes both an intermediate version of the accompaniment and the original early advanced version of the accompaniment to cater to a wider range of piano playing abilities.
